The Rock That Hit Your Windshield
Glass is the most frequent small claim in auto insurance and one of the most confusing, because policies handle it in genuinely different ways.
Which coverage responds
A stone thrown up by a truck is a sudden external event, which normally puts it under comprehensive rather than collision. Glass broken in a collision is part of that collision claim. Glass broken by a break-in is part of the theft or vandalism claim.
The deductible question
This is where policies diverge. Some apply your ordinary comprehensive deductible. Some offer a separate, lower glass deductible you can select. Some offer a full glass provision covering replacement without a deductible. Availability differs by carrier and it is something you choose in advance, not something you discover at claim time.
The practical consequence: on a policy with an ordinary comprehensive deductible, a single windshield on many vehicles costs less than the deductible, so there is nothing to claim. On a vehicle with a camera-equipped windshield requiring calibration, the number can be considerably higher and a claim may well be worth making.
Repair versus replacement
A small chip away from the driver's direct line of sight and away from the edges can often be resin-repaired. That preserves the factory seal, takes less time, and is far cheaper. Some carriers waive the deductible for a repair specifically because it prevents a replacement later. Ask.
Cracks that have started to run, damage in the camera's field of view, and damage at the bonded edge generally mean replacement.
Do not skip the calibration question
If a forward-facing camera looks through the glass, replacement is not complete until that camera is recalibrated to the manufacturer's procedure. Confirm the quote includes it and confirm it was performed. A car handed back with a warning light or with a system quietly aiming wrong is not a finished job.
Choosing who does the work
You choose the glass shop, as you choose a body shop. Insurers often have arrangements with glass networks, which can be convenient. Ask what glass is being fitted, whether it meets the specification your vehicle needs, and what warranty applies to leaks and to the calibration.
The one bit of urgency
A chip left through a hot afternoon and a cold morning becomes a crack, and a crack is a replacement. Getting a chip repaired within days is genuinely the cheapest version of this whole page.

Will a glass claim raise my rate?
How glass claims are treated varies by carrier, and comprehensive claims are commonly weighed differently from at-fault accidents. Ask your own company before filing so you decide with facts.
Is a chip repair worth doing?
Almost always. It is quick, keeps the original seal, and prevents the crack that turns a small job into a full replacement with possible calibration.
Do I have to use the insurer's glass company?
You choose the shop. Their network may be convenient and there is no requirement to use it. Ask what glass is being fitted and whether calibration is included.
