Getting Around While the Car Is Away
There are two entirely separate routes to a rental car after a crash, and confusing them is why people end up with an unexpected bill.
Route one: your own rental reimbursement coverage
This is an optional coverage you buy in advance. It typically pays up to a daily amount for up to a maximum number of days, and both numbers matter. A daily limit below local rental rates means you pay the difference; a day cap shorter than your repair means you pay the tail end.
The critical point: if you did not buy it before the crash, it is not there. Rental reimbursement cannot be added to an existing claim. It is inexpensive relative to what it does, and it is the coverage people most often regret skipping.
Route two: the at-fault driver's insurer
Where another driver is responsible, their liability coverage generally addresses your loss of use. That is not a fixed daily allowance so much as a reasonable substitute for what you lost, and it does not depend on you having bought anything. What it does depend on is their carrier accepting liability, which can take days or weeks.
This is the practical reason people with rental coverage use their own policy first even when the other driver was at fault: the car arrives now instead of after the liability discussion.
Where the limits bite
- Parts delays. A repair waiting three weeks on a back-ordered part will exhaust a short day cap.
- Total losses. Rental entitlement on a totaled vehicle usually ends a defined number of days after the offer is made, not when you have found a replacement car. Ask for that date in writing early.
- Vehicle class. A daily limit set for a compact does not cover a truck or a van.
- Fuel, tolls, additional drivers and young-driver fees are generally yours.
The rental counter question
They will offer their own damage waiver and liability products. Whether you need them depends on what your own policy does with a rental vehicle, which varies. Find out before you are standing at the counter under time pressure — one phone call to your agent settles it.
If you cannot drive a standard car
If you need an accessible vehicle or a specific vehicle type, raise it immediately. Arranging one takes longer and the standard daily limit may not stretch to it.
Ask us what rental reimbursement costs on your policy. It is usually a small line item and it is the one people wish they had.

Can I add rental coverage after the accident?
No. It has to be on the policy before the loss. This is the most common regret we hear in the days after a crash.
How long does rental coverage last on a total loss?
Typically for a defined number of days after the settlement offer rather than until you buy a replacement. Ask for the exact cut-off date in writing as soon as the total loss is declared.
Do I need the rental company's insurance?
It depends on what your own policy does with rented vehicles, and that varies by policy. Ask your agent before you get to the counter.
