Who You Are Actually Talking To

The word adjuster covers several different jobs, and knowing which one you are dealing with tells you what they can and cannot do for you.

The roles

The intake or first-notice representative takes the initial report. They are gathering facts and setting up the file, and they do not decide anything.

The desk or claims adjuster owns the file. They investigate, determine liability, apply the policy and authorize payment. This is the person whose name you want.

The field or material damage appraiser inspects the vehicle and writes the damage estimate. They evaluate damage; they do not decide coverage.

The independent adjuster is a contractor working the file on the carrier's behalf, common after storms and in areas without local staff.

The injury or bodily injury adjuster handles medical and injury aspects, which move on a slower and separate track.

The special investigations unit becomes involved where something needs verification. Contact from them is not an accusation.

What your adjuster is actually deciding

  1. Is there coverage for this loss under this policy?
  2. Who is responsible, and to what degree?
  3. What is the damage, and what does it cost to repair or replace?
  4. What does the policy owe, after deductibles and limits?

What they cannot do

They cannot pay beyond your policy limits, cannot add coverage you did not buy, and cannot change policy language. Frustration on those points is understandable and misdirected — that is a coverage conversation to have with your agent before a loss, not with an adjuster during one.

How to work with one effectively

The adjuster is not your enemy

Most are managing a large caseload and following defined procedures. A file that is organized, documented and responsive genuinely moves faster than one that is not — that is our experience across a lot of claims, and it is the cheapest advantage available to you.

When you buy a policy through us, you also get someone to call when the adjuster goes quiet.

More of what callers ask

Can I ask for a different adjuster?

You can raise concerns with a supervisor, and reassignment is not usually the fix. Being specific about what is not happening tends to work better than asking for a new person.

Why does an independent adjuster have my claim?

Carriers use contracted adjusters for capacity, geography and after large events. They work under the carrier's authority and the same policy terms apply.

Does the appraiser decide if I am covered?

No. Appraisers evaluate damage. Coverage and liability decisions sit with the claims adjuster who owns the file.
